Janet Jackson

Janet Jackson on vinyl: R&B, pop and new jack swing

In short: Janet Jackson, the youngest child of the Jackson family, found her own sound with “Control” in 1986: hard drum machines, funk and self-assured lyrics, produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. “Rhythm Nation 1814” (1989) made her a global star for good. The Vinyl Room currently has 11 Janet Jackson records.

What makes Janet Jackson special?

Before “Control” she stood in the shadow of her famous brothers – on her first albums “Janet Jackson” (1982) and “Dream Street” (1984) she still sang light pop and soul. With Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis from Minneapolis came the leap: “Control” and “Rhythm Nation 1814” shaped late-eighties R&B, and “Rhythm Nation 1814” is regarded as the only album with seven top-five singles on the Billboard Hot 100.

In the nineties she moved to Virgin; “janet.” (1993) sounded warmer and more sensual. “All For You” (2001) showed a lighter, danceable side.
