Jack DeJohnette on vinyl: drums between Miles Davis and ECM
In short: Jack DeJohnette (1942–2025) from Chicago is regarded as one of the most versatile drummers in jazz. In the late sixties he played with Charles Lloyd and then with Miles Davis – on “Bitches Brew”, among others. From the seventies he recorded mainly for ECM, as a bandleader and with partners such as Keith Jarrett. The Vinyl Room currently has 6 Jack DeJohnette records.
What makes Jack DeJohnette special?
His playing flowed rather than just keeping time – with cymbals like colours and a keen feel for his bandmates. On “The DeJohnette Complex” (1969) he played melodica as well as drums. “Ruta And Daitya” shows him in a duo with Keith Jarrett, with whom he later played for a long time in the Standards Trio.
With John Abercrombie and Dave Holland he formed the trio Gateway, and with Collin Walcott came “Cloud Dance”. “New Directions In Europe” is a live recording of his band New Directions, and with Werner Pirchner and Harry Pepl he recorded an unusual album with vibraphone and guitar.
