How often?

Herbie Mann on vinyl: jazz flute with Latin and bossa nova

In short: Herbie Mann (1930–2003) from New York made the flute popular in jazz. Earlier than many others he brought Latin rhythms and Brazilian music into his jazz – and with records such as “Memphis Underground” (1969) he reached an audience far beyond the jazz clubs. The Vinyl Room currently has 5 Herbie Mann records.

What makes Herbie Mann special?

Curiosity about the world: in the early sixties Mann travelled to Brazil, and “Brazil, Bossa Nova & Blues” (1962) shows how early he took up bossa nova. On Atlantic he played songs from a Broadway musical on “The Roar Of The Greasepaint – The Smell Of The Crowd”.

His beginnings can be heard on the two collections “Early Mann – The Bethlehem Years”: fifties recordings for the Bethlehem label. Plus “Mann In The Morning”.
