How often?

Grant Green on vinyl: Blue Note guitar with groove

In short: Grant Green (1935–1979) from St. Louis played guitar with clear, singing single notes – almost like a horn player. In the sixties he recorded numerous albums for Blue Note, from hard bop to soul jazz. From the late sixties he got funkier, and those records are much sought after by DJs and hip-hop producers today. The Vinyl Room currently has 9 Grant Green records.

What makes Grant Green special?

His tone is recognisable at once: few chords, lots of blues, a calm flow. “Green Street” (1961) shows him in a trio. Some of his Blue Note sessions only came out years later – “Born To Be Blue” was recorded in 1961/62 and released in 1985, “Solid” was recorded in 1964 and released in 1979.

The funk phase: “Green Is Beautiful” and the live album “Alive!” (both 1970), the film music “The Final Comedown” and “The Main Attraction” (1976) on Kudu. Whether original or later edition is noted with each copy.
