Eric Dolphy

Eric Dolphy on vinyl: saxophone, bass clarinet and flute

In short: Eric Dolphy (1928–1964) from Los Angeles played alto saxophone, flute and bass clarinet – and established the bass clarinet as a solo instrument in jazz. He worked with Charles Mingus and John Coltrane and recorded “Out To Lunch!” shortly before his early death in 1964. The Vinyl Room currently has 4 Eric Dolphy records.

What makes Eric Dolphy special?

His lines leap in wide intervals, often with notes that sound like bird calls – firmly rooted in bebop and at the same time wide open to the future. Here you can hear him with the Latin Jazz Quintet on “Caribé”, recorded in 1960 and released in 1961, and on “Images” alongside saxophonist Oliver Nelson.

Plus “The Eric Dolphy Memorial Album” and “3 Dolphy Group’s – Previously Unreleased”.
