Den Sorte Skole

Den Sorte Skole on vinyl: collages from the record crate

In short: Den Sorte Skole – “The Black School” – is a DJ and producer duo from Copenhagen. Simon Dokkedal and Martin Højland build large sound collages from samples of records from all over the world, somewhere between hip-hop, psychedelia, world music and classical. The Vinyl Room currently has 6 Den Sorte Skole records.

What makes Den Sorte Skole special?

Their records are journeys through music history: sounds from many countries and decades, old jazz, soul and rock records – cut up, reassembled and woven into continuous pieces. The “Lektion” series is their core work; for “III” they used hundreds of records.

“Indians & Cowboys” and “Ghosts & Robots” take the approach further, and with composer Karsten Fundal and the Copenhagen Philharmonic they created a “Symphony No. II” for sampler and chamber orchestra.
