De La Soul on vinyl: colourful, playful hip-hop
In short: De La Soul came from Amityville on Long Island: Posdnuos, Trugoy the Dove and Maseo. With “3 Feet High And Rising” from 1989 they brought humour, skits and samples from every corner of the record collection into hip-hop – a counterpoint to the hard rap of those years. The Vinyl Room currently has 4 De La Soul records.
What makes De La Soul special?
Producer Prince Paul and the three built “3 Feet High And Rising” from snippets of soul, pop and children’s songs – including the single “Me Myself And I”. Even their first 12-inch “Plug Tunin’” from 1988 sounded unlike anything else.
With “De La Soul Is Dead” from 1991 they deliberately said goodbye to their colourful image. Rights and contractual issues kept their first six albums off the major streaming platforms for years; they only became available there on 3 March 2023.
