How often?

Curtis Amy on vinyl: soul jazz from the West Coast

In short: Curtis Amy (1929–2002) from Houston played tenor and soprano saxophone and in the early sixties recorded a series of albums for Pacific Jazz in Los Angeles – bluesy, swinging and with plenty of soul. Later he was a sought-after studio musician; the saxophone solo in The Doors’ “Touch Me” is his. The Vinyl Room currently has 5 Curtis Amy records.

What makes Curtis Amy special?

Saxophone and organ as a strong pair: on “The Blues Message” (1960) and “Meetin’ Here” (1961) he plays with organist Paul Bryant – soul jazz with plenty of blues. “Groovin’ Blue” (1961) was made with drummer Frank Butler.

“Tippin’ On Through” (1962) captures an evening at the Lighthouse, the famous jazz club in Hermosa Beach near Los Angeles.
