Chuck Berry

Chuck Berry on vinyl: rock ’n’ roll from St. Louis

In short: Chuck Berry (1926–2017) from St. Louis is regarded as one of the inventors of rock ’n’ roll. From 1955 he recorded hits such as “Maybellene”, “Roll Over Beethoven” and “Johnny B. Goode” for Chess in Chicago. His guitar riffs and his lyrics about cars, school and teenagers shaped generations of bands – from the Beatles to the Rolling Stones. The Vinyl Room currently has 10 Chuck Berry records.

What makes Chuck Berry special?

He was guitarist, singer and songwriter in one – and told whole stories in three minutes. We have “One Dozen Berrys”, originally released in 1958, “More Chuck Berry”, “Twist” and the collection “Chuck Berry’s Greatest Hits”.

From the sixties there’s “Chuck Berry On Stage”, “St. Louis To Liverpool” and “Chuck Berry In London” – records from the time when the British bands he had influenced brought his songs back into the charts. Plus “Wild Berrys” in a later edition.
