Chick Corea

Chick Corea on vinyl: piano between jazz and classical

In short: Chick Corea (1941–2021) is regarded as one of the most influential jazz pianists. He played with Miles Davis in the late sixties, founded the band Return To Forever and recorded solo piano, trio and chamber music for the Munich label ECM. The Vinyl Room currently has 9 Chick Corea records.

What makes Chick Corea special?

The two “Piano Improvisations” were made in Oslo in 1971 – solo piano, often freely improvised, open and clear in sound. “Children’s Songs” are short, simple piano pieces that Corea wrote over many years.

“Trio Music” (1982) reunites him with Miroslav Vitous and Roy Haynes, with whom he had recorded “Now He Sings, Now He Sobs” back in 1968; plus “Trio Music, Live In Europe”. “Septet” combines piano with strings and winds, “Voyage” is a duo with flautist Steve Kujala, and “Sundance” presents earlier recordings on Groove Merchant.
