AIR

AIR on vinyl: synthesizer dreams from Versailles

In short: AIR are Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel from Versailles. With “Moon Safari” (1998) they became known worldwide – warm analogue synthesizers, vocoder and melodies like something from a seventies film. Later they also wrote film music, for example for Sofia Coppola’s “The Virgin Suicides”. The Vinyl Room currently has 7 AIR records.

What makes AIR special?

AIR combine French pop, electronics and easy listening into a sound that is both dreamy and precisely built. On “10 000 Hz Legend” (2001) they pushed their sound in a more experimental direction – with guests such as Beck and tracks such as “People In The City”.

“Once Upon A Time” dates from the time of “Pocket Symphony” (2007), while “Love 2” (2009) is more playful and poppy again. Their early records came out on the French label Source, an offshoot of Virgin.
