Leftfield

Leftfield on vinyl: electronics with a mind of their own

In short: Leftfield stands for electronic music that doesn’t follow the rules of the club or the charts – idiosyncratic, playful, hard to pigeonhole. Many of these records come from Britain, but the term stretches from pop to sound art. The Vinyl Room currently has 108 leftfield records.

What is leftfield?

Pop with edges and sounds with ideas: Björk is represented with “Fossora”, Gorillaz with “Plastic Beach”, Primal Scream with “Demodelica” and Róisín Murphy with “Hit Parade”.

The Caretaker sounds quite different: “Everywhere At The End Of Time” is a multi-part work about forgetting. Plus Modeselektor with “Monkeytown”, Mo Kolours from London and Dntel with “Dumb Luck”.

What to look for

Many leftfield albums come out in several editions, for example on coloured vinyl or as a double LP; label, catalogue number and year of release help you tell which edition you have – it’s noted with each copy.
