How often?

United Artists on vinyl: from the cinema to the record shelf

In short: United Artists started as a film company – founded in 1919 by Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks and D. W. Griffith. The record company followed in the late fifties: at first mainly for film music, soon for jazz, pop, rock and soul as well. The Vinyl Room currently has 42 United Artists Records releases.

What makes United Artists special?

The early jazz records are sought after: we have, for example, “Money Jungle” (1963) by Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus and Max Roach, Art Farmer’s “The Aztec Suite”, the Curtis Fuller Sextet’s “Sliding Easy” and Herb Pomeroy’s “Band In Boston”. Add Lena Horne and the piano duo Ferrante & Teicher.

In Europe United Artists also released krautrock in the seventies: Can with “Ege Bamyasi” and “Soon Over Babaluma”, plus Popol Vuh. Soul and funk come from Ike Turner, Z.Z. Hill and Brass Construction, film music from “The Black Stallion” (1979), for example. In the late seventies EMI took over the record company.
