What makes Savoy special?

Charlie Parker’s Savoy sessions from 1944 onwards are part of the foundation of modern jazz; we have recordings from this period on “The Charlie Parker Story” and “The Genius Of Charlie Parker”. Add Dexter Gordon with “Dexter Rides Again”, Kenny Clarke’s “Klook’s Clique”, Milt Jackson, Hank Jones, Frank Wess, Curtis Fuller and Erroll Garner’s “Penthouse Serenade”.

The other side of Savoy is gospel: James Cleveland with the Gospel Workshop of America Mass Choir, Inez Andrews, Myrna Summers, the Institutional Radio Choir and the “Newport Spiritual Stars” – records with big choirs and lots of power.
