MPS Records on vinyl: jazz from the Black Forest

In short: MPS stands for “Musik Produktion Schwarzwald”. The label from Villingen grew out of SABA’s jazz label in 1968, and producer Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer recorded American and European jazz musicians there with a particularly clean sound. The Vinyl Room currently has 5 records on MPS.

What makes MPS Records special?

Cosmopolitan jazz from the German countryside: on “Violin Summit” four violinists – Stuff Smith, Stéphane Grappelli, Svend Asmussen and the young Jean-Luc Ponty – meet for a concert in Basel. The Clarke-Boland Big Band, led by drummer Kenny Clarke and pianist Francy Boland, shows European big-band jazz with “Sax No End”.

Sun Ra sounds completely different: “It’s After The End Of The World” captures his Arkestra live in Germany. Plus swing from the Milt Buckner Trio with “Play Chords” and gospel from the Robert Patterson Singers.
