Janus Records

Janus Records on vinyl: British funk and prog for America

In short: Janus Records was an American label of the seventies. It brought British bands to the US – above all Cymande, whose Caribbean-rooted funk is still sampled today, and the progressive rock band Camel. Soul, jazz and pop from America joined them. The Vinyl Room currently has 15 records on Janus Records.

What makes Janus Records special?

Cymande are here with “The Message”, “Second Time Round” and “Promised Heights” – the London band blended funk, soul, reggae and jazz into a groove all its own. Rock releases include Camel with “Moonmadness” and Seventh Wave with “Psi-Fi”.

From America come Minnie Riperton with “Come To My Garden”, drummer and singer Grady Tate with “She Is My Lady” and Eddie Harris with “Smokin”. Plus Donovan with “Donovan P. Leitch”, Charlie with “No Second Chance” and even a comedy record: David Frost’s “The Frost Report On Everything”.
