Herbie Hancock

Herbie Hancock on vinyl: from “Maiden Voyage” to “Rockit”

In short: Herbie Hancock, born in Chicago in 1940, was the pianist in Miles Davis’ second great quintet and recorded classics such as “Maiden Voyage” for Blue Note in the sixties. In the seventies he combined jazz with funk (“Head Hunters”), in the eighties with electronics and hip-hop (“Rockit”). He is regarded as one of the most versatile musicians in jazz. The Vinyl Room currently has 10 Herbie Hancock records.

What makes Herbie Hancock special?

His curiosity: “Inventions And Dimensions” (1963) is an experiment with rhythm and free form, “Maiden Voyage” (1965) an album built around the sea with pieces that became standards, and “Speak Like A Child” (1968) sounds almost orchestral thanks to its unusual horn line-up.

With “Future Shock” (1983) and the hit “Rockit” he brought scratching and drum machines to a large audience. We also have “The Best Of Herbie Hancock” and “Traces” on UpFront – with recordings from Albert “Tootie” Heath’s 1969 “Kawaida” session, Hancock on piano.
