MOBY

Moby, born Richard Melville Hall, is an American electronic musician, producer, and songwriter who played a key role in bringing electronic music into the mainstream in the 1990s. His work blends techno, ambient, punk, and blues influences, and he achieved worldwide recognition with his 1999 album Play. The album was groundbreaking not only for its sound but also for the fact that every track was licensed for use in films, television, and advertising, helping electronic music reach a far broader audience than before.

For music collectors, Play is particularly notable for its extensive use of early 20th-century blues and gospel samples sourced from the Alan Lomax field recordings, creating a bridge between electronic production and American musical history. Moby’s stage name comes from his relation to Herman Melville, the author of Moby-Dick, a fact that has become part of his artistic mythology. His first major hit, “Go” from 1991, famously samples the Twin Peaks theme, making it an early example of ambient techno entering pop culture. Many of his albums exist in multiple vinyl masterings and regional pressings, with subtle differences that collectors enjoy comparing, and several later releases are praised for their high-quality 180-gram vinyl and relatively dynamic, low-compression mastering. Beyond commercial success, Moby has also been an advocate of remix culture, releasing parts of his catalog under Creative Commons licenses long before this approach became widespread in electronic music.
