Catalyst Records was a short-lived but influential independent jazz label founded in the early 1970s in New York. Closely connected to the city’s loft jazz and free jazz scene, Catalyst became known for documenting adventurous, spiritual, and politically charged music at a time when major labels showed little interest in the avant-garde. The imprint gave space to forward-thinking artists such as Noah Howard, Byard Lancaster, and other key figures of the underground jazz movement.

Though its catalog was relatively small, Catalyst releases have gained cult status among collectors for their raw energy, independent spirit, and rarity. Original pressings are especially sought after, valued for their analog warmth and historical importance within the broader story of 1970s free jazz. Today, Catalyst Records is remembered as a vital document of a fiercely creative era, when artist-run and independent labels helped push jazz into bold new territories.
